    Foresight
I don't use this thing too often, but just as a heads up I'm getting PRK eye surgery on Wednesday. Looking forward to shedding my need for glasses for good. That said, hope to see you folks again soon.

    Which PVR
So, I'm debating getting a PVR for my home. Being a Shaw subscriber (and unlikely to change anytime soon since I'm sedentary like that) one option for me is Shaws HDPVR, which streets about $600 bones, but I think has no subscription (other than Shaw cable in the first place). Or I could go for a TIVO Series 2 for $200 plus a subscription plan (@$150 a year).

Tivo Pros: Smaller initial cost, carrier independence.
Tivo Cons: No HD support, on going costs

    Shaw Pros: HD capable
Shaw Cons: larger initial cost, carrier dependence

Normally I use this thing to complain, so I feel the need to talk about when good things happen in my life.

Last night I had an awesome date. We went to Subeez for a really nice dinner (+ Sangria). I had a free range chicken stuffed with a sun dried tomato stuffing, and she had a nice plate of mussels. Unfortunately the tiramisu was taken off the menu, but they had a suitable replacement for dessert.

Afterwards we went to the 5th Avenue Cinemas and watched the documentary Man on Wire. It's about Phillipe PetitI, the tightrope walker whom performed between the Twin Towers in 1974. I have to say this documentary was absolutely amazing. The director paced it perfectly, the music was awesome, and most of all you're left with a really astonishing feeling at the end of the film. It's difficult to articulate, but you just feel really good after watching this film. The thought of someone doing this stunt is amazing, and you feel like nothing similar will happen ever again.

All in all a wonderful evening.

Requirements you HATE to see on a FRD

    "Other Settings:
Warning message: Prompt before exiting application"

I need to get clarification on this, if it's a preference that lessons my hatred, but if it's a requirement to always prompt the user before exiting I want to throat punch the guy who made that request.

I'm taking a mental health day to check myself before I wreck myself. There is something in me lately that's not me. I'm not sure where it's from, what it wants, or even worse how to get rid of it. I feel like all that's coming out of me lately is bile and venom. I don't like it, and I won't stand for it.

Also, I want to publicly apologize to [info]wulfansur and [info]shanathalas for being a major asshole. I said somethings I should not have, and more confusingly don't even agree with. I'd be easy for me to say the alcohol was talking, but that's too simple an excuse for my tastes. You are both amazing people, hopefully I haven't strained anything beyond repair. That being said a simple apology only goes so far, I need to back it up with actions.

To everyone, I might not be out as much lately. I'm thinking that some time to myself might be in everyone's best interest.

    Inevitability
Talked to my Dad last night, mostly to get the update on my Grandfather. He turned 89 in March. Doesn't look like he's doing too well. I could tell my Dad was nervous even though he wasn't saying anything to the sort. Grandfather had just gotten out of the hospital for some heart issues, but was still really weak and tired all the time. He's lost a ton of weight (down to like 108) too. I'm kinda preparing for the worst case scenario, since last time I saw him in May he was like "This'll probably be the last time you see me Robert." I feel bad for him, he's always been a really active man, and this weakness and inability to do work outside is really going to accelerate the whole process I think. I'm pretty sure that the timeline will be sometime in November, just a gut feeling really. That's when my Grandmother's birthday was, so I wouldn't be too surprised if he let go around that time. He might make it to American Thanksgiving if we're lucky.

    Blessing in Disguise?
Called Fido today to see if I could upgrade my account to an iPhone, since I have a shit ton of Fido dollars saved up. Turns out that my account isn't up for renewal until January 2, 2009 at which point I could then get a new phone. Frankly, it's for the best as the plans are ridiculous plus my tech-lust will subside. I DO need a new phone though, my Motorola has had a lot of abuse and frequently has connection issues. That being said it's good to know that I basically cannot get an iphone unless I get out of of my current contract at $400 to cancel. Just makes it much easier to abate the geek urges.

Who wants to go see this with me?

I'm hoping 5th Ave get this over the weekend. If so I will see it, undoubtedly.

EDIT: Looks like Canada doesn't get it until July 18.

At work my PM is French ( and quick to tell you NOT Quebecois). Today we were discussing up coming vacation time between the two of us.

Oddly each of us is taking a holiday on the opposite nationality's national holiday.

    Him: July 4
    Me: July 14

Also, it's amazing how slight details can affect the respect of things.

For instance saying "Going to a wedding" for a holiday reason is considered very noble. "Going to a wedding in Vegas", ..... probably not so much. I'll let you gather which reason I put down for time off.

    New Canucks Jersey = SUX0R
Now, I'm no graphic designer, but let's rip apart the new canuck jersey, shall we?

    - too busy
    - horrid font choice (what is that? Helvetica?)
    - the goddamn stupid ass orca (which looks like someone photocopied it on)

They should have just used the throwback jersey, and stylized the logo. Instead it looks like some marketing jackass with a cracked copy of MS Word 98 threw it together. I genuinely feel pain looking at this.

    The calm before....
In order to be able to fly home for my reunion I'm going to have to go into crunch time for the next month. This means that while my current schedule won't change to much to outsiders, I'm going to have a lot less downtime for a month. It sucks, but that's life. If I don't make the push though, it could mean a really big paying milestone is delayed, and I don't want to be responsible for that. The good news is I won't miss things like movie night, DnD, gym, or the occasional Sanctuary (now that it's on Fridays!). The bad news is I'll have to get into work by 9am everyday (unusual for me), work 2 nights a week after the gym, and work Sundays. It's a lot, BUT I haven't been home in a while and I really want to visit home. This weekend I'll be given'r for sure, because I'm about to enter my own private hell for a month.

    Toy for Sale?
I'm pondering selling my ES-1 with 64MB smart card + USB Card Reader.

    Pros:
    - Unit is cute and simple to use
    - Could be useful in live situations
    - If I ever spent the time to load custom sounds on it, I might actually use it

    Cons:
    - I never use the damn thing
    - Uploading samples to it is a bitch, you need to use like 32k Sample Rate or some weird ass shit.
    - External gear that's somewhat limited

    Thoughts?
I could maybe get $250 with the card + reader.

EDIT: Decided not to sell it, I'm writing a program which will batch convert samples to 32k.

    Amusing antecdote
the pretext to this annotated discussion is I've found a buyer for my iMac, and needed to get a box to put it in

me: Do we have any spare boxes? I sold my personal iMac and need a box.
Austrian-born IT guy: I do not understand how the two are related
me: Well, you see I brought in my iMac from home and since I sold it I need a box.
ABITG: Ah, I see, do you need X86 or PPC
    me: ....................
me: oh wait, I mean I need a cardboard box to put it in
ABITG: Ah, yes, I see, my english. Now I understand. Take any of the non-Apple boxes
(a few minutes go by, keep in mind I pointed him towards Urban Dictionary for some other slang months ago)
ABITG: Just in my defense, box = computer was the 7th/8th most popular definition for box
me: I'm curious to know what the first one is....
ABITG: yes, I was quite surprised

    DJ Charnelhound Setlist
for all 2.5 of you that where there

    1. Faggot House - Panacea
    2. Nordic Rampage - Needle Sharing
    3. Bring out your Dead - Gridlock
    4. Omniman - Download
    5. Caballa Smells Funny - Architect
    6. Whisper to a Scream - Acumen Nation
    7. slalom - Dryft
    8. 6 - Tarmvred
    9. Shuurajou - Antigen Shift
    10. Coma (t.i.k. remix) - Converter
    11. le dénominateur Commun - Iszoloscope
    12. The Snow Hill - Scorn

Only DJ faux pax was playing 2 tracks off of the same EP. I'm guessing most folks won't able to pick which 2 those are, so I'm not too worried.

Technically the laptop DJ thing went off with out a hitch, but in actuality I had gobs of technical issues at home setting up. Keep in mind that I was using MP3s in Live, which requires a decoding cache. I need to experiment further, but I think it was disk I/O issues. I'm using a FW drive, but I wouldn't call it exactly high performance, and I don't know what chipset it has. I noticed most issues when importing an mp3 into live and it would perform it's analysis on it. Even when the process was complete Live would become sluggish and unresponsive, as if the audio engine was borked. Sure enough checking the system.log in Console revealed that IOAudioStream in the kernel was puking on some playback movement call. I need to further investigate this, but I don't forsee this as an issue using Live for more written music (sample loops and midi / VSTis). MP3s require great overhead for decoding, so I suspect that was the culprit. If I started DJing more frequently I'd need to come up with a solution, probably a higher performance FW drive.

On the plus side, this was the first time I got to try Tiger's aggregate device functionality. I purchased an M-Audio transit USB jobber dirt cheap, and combined it with the internal Apple device so I had a Cue Mix and a House Mix. That worked nice and easy.

Thanks to [info]cheekydevil for the opportunity and [info]r_lex and [info]contrasoma for being a crowd
